Instagram Hashtag Limit: 5 per Post, Not 30
The Instagram hashtag limit is 5 hashtags per post, and it covers feed posts and Reels. Instagram cut it from 30 in December 2025, and its Help Center now says “You can use up to 5 tags on a post.” So how many hashtags should you use on Instagram? Use 3 to 5 that describe the post, or none. The blocks of 20 or 30 that older guides recommend no longer fit.
Below: what changed, how to pick the 5, where they go in the caption, and what to do with the hashtag lists you saved.
Why does your saved hashtag block stop working?
You paste the same block of 30 tags under every post, the way you have for years. Plenty of scheduler templates and cheat sheets still suggest it. Under the current rule, 25 of those tags have no place in the caption at all.
What does sticking to the old rule cost?
Every tag past the fifth is wasted space, and a long block pushes your caption’s real words down. Worse, a list built for volume (tags like #love or #instagood) leaves you with 5 slots spent on words that say nothing about the post. Five tags only help when each one names what the post is about.
What is the Instagram hashtag limit in 2026?
| Rule | Now | Before December 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Hashtags per post | 5 | 30 |
| Hashtags per Reel | 5 | 30 |
| Caption length | 2,200 characters | 2,200 characters |
| Visible before “more” | About 125 characters | About 125 characters |
Hashtags count toward the 2,200-character caption limit, like every other character. Our guide to how to write Instagram captions covers the rest of the caption rules, and the character limit guide lists the numbers for X, Threads, YouTube and Pinterest in one table.
Instagram changes rules without much notice. When the app shows something different from this page, the app wins.
How many hashtags should you use on Instagram?
Between 3 and 5, or none. That is the rule Nexin’s caption job follows, because 5 is the ceiling and a weak tag doesn’t earn a slot. Use fewer when you can’t find 5 that fit: two precise tags beat five vague ones.
How do you pick the 5 hashtags?
Each tag should pass one test: would someone searching it want this exact post?
- Name the topic. One tag for what the post is about, in the words people use: #mealprep, not #foodie.
- Name the niche. One tag for the audience or the corner of the topic: #mealprepforbeginners.
- Name the format or angle if people search it: #budgetrecipes for a recipe post built around cost.
- Add a brand tag only if people already use it, such as one you ask customers to post with.
- Drop anything generic. Tags like #instagood, #photooftheday or #follow describe every post, so they describe none.
Rotate tags by post. The same 5 under every post, whatever it covers, is the old block of 30 in a smaller size.
Where do hashtags go in a caption?
At the end. The first line or two (about 125 characters) is all a scroller sees before “more”, so that space belongs to your hook, not to tags. Write the caption first, the call to action next, then the hashtags on the last line.
Instagram search also reads the words in your caption, not only your hashtags. A caption that names the topic plainly (“easy weeknight pasta with five ingredients”) gives search more to match than any tag. Our Instagram caption generator guide shows how to get captions that do both.
What should you do with your old hashtag lists?
Cut each list down instead of throwing it away:
- Group the tags by topic. One short list per content pillar, not one master list.
- Keep the specific ones. Niche and topic tags stay; volume tags go.
- Cap each list at 5. If a group has 12 good tags, keep the best 5 and swap them in by post.
- Update your templates. Check scheduler templates, caption files and any AI prompt that still says “add 20 to 30 hashtags”.
FAQ
How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?
Up to 5 per post or Reel. Instagram lowered the cap from 30 to 5 in December 2025.
Do hashtags still help on Instagram?
They help Instagram understand what a post is about, which is why relevance matters more than count. They don’t replace a clear caption, a strong first line or a post worth saving.
Should I put hashtags in the first comment?
Keep them in the caption. Putting tags in a comment was a workaround for crowded captions under the 30-tag rule; with 5 tags at the end of the caption, there is no crowding to work around.
Do hashtags count toward the Instagram character limit?
Yes. Every character of a hashtag, including the # sign, counts toward the 2,200-character caption limit.
Why does my scheduler still suggest 30 hashtags?
Its template was written for the old rule. Edit the template to 5, and check AI prompts and saved caption files the same way.
Captions with the hashtag count done for you. Nexin’s Instagram caption job writes the hook inside the first 125 characters and adds 3 to 5 niche hashtags or none, and the check tool flags any caption that goes past Instagram’s 5-tag limit before you post. Nexin writes and checks; it doesn’t post for you. See the Instagram module or see pricing.
