Worked example: 170 cm in feet
170 ÷ 30.48 = 5.5774 ft. The whole part is 5 feet. The decimal part, 0.5774, times 12 is 6.93 inches. So 170 cm is about 5 ft 7 in once rounded to the nearest inch. Doing the same for 183 cm gives 6.0039 ft, which is why 183 cm is the usual metric stand-in for six feet.
