How to calculate your GPA
Each letter grade has a point value: A+ and A are 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7 and F 0. Multiply each grade’s points by the course’s credits to get its grade points, add them up, and divide by the total credits.
Take a term with five courses:
- A in a 4-credit course: 16.0 grade points.
- B+ in a 3-credit course: 9.9.
- A- in a 3-credit course: 11.1.
- B in a 4-credit course: 12.0.
- A in a 1-credit course: 4.0.
That is 53.0 grade points over 15 credits, a GPA of 3.53. The GPA calculator does the multiplying and adding as you fill in the rows.
Why are credits part of the GPA?
A course worth more credits takes up more of your schedule, so it weighs more in the average. A B in a 4-credit course pulls your GPA down more than a B in a 1-credit course.
What does a 3.5 GPA mean on a 4.0 scale?
It sits between a B+ (3.3) and an A- (3.7) on average. How a given GPA is judged depends on the school, the program or the employer reading it, so check what the place you’re applying to asks for.
Limits worth knowing
- It uses the common unweighted 4.0 scale. It has no extra points for honors or AP courses.
- Schools differ: some give A+ more than 4.0, some don’t use minus grades, some count pass/fail courses differently. Check your school’s own scale when the exact number matters.
