Added Oct 21, 2026

This meters to feet converter changes meters into feet as you type, using the exact length of the foot. It covers the cases where metric and US units collide: a height on a passport, a ceiling in a floor plan, a pool length, the elevation of a mountain or the reach of a drone. It runs in your browser and spends no credits.

How many feet are in a meter

One meter is about 3.2808 feet. The exact relationship is set from the other side: one foot is 0.3048 m by definition, so a meter is 1 ÷ 0.3048 feet, a number that never ends. The converter works from the exact definition and shows up to 8 significant digits.

Meters to feet formula

Divide the meters by 0.3048, or multiply by 3.28084:

ft = m ÷ 0.3048

For a fast estimate, multiply by 3 and add 10 percent: 10 m becomes 30 + 3 = 33 ft, against an exact 32.81 ft.

Worked example: a height in feet and inches

A person 1.8 m tall is 1.8 ÷ 0.3048 = 5.9055 ft. Height is usually said in feet and inches, so take the decimal part, 0.9055 ft, and multiply by 12: that is 10.87 in. The answer is about 5 ft 10.87 in, which most people round to 5 ft 11.

Rooms, pools and mountains

A metric ceiling of 2.4 m is 7.87 ft, a little under the 8 ft common in US homes. A 25 m pool, the short-course length, is 82.02 ft, and an Olympic 50 m pool is 164.04 ft. At the top end, an elevation of 8,849 m converts to about 29,032 ft.

FAQ

Is a meter longer than a yard?

Yes. A yard is 3 ft, or 0.9144 m. A meter is about 3.28 ft, which makes it 8.56 cm longer than a yard.

How do I get feet and inches instead of decimal feet?

Multiply the decimal part of the feet by 12 to get the inches, as in the example above. You can also pick in as the second unit to get the whole length in inches.
