Roman Numerals Converter

Convert numbers from 1 to 3999 to Roman numerals and back, one per line, with invalid numerals like IIII caught and corrected. It runs in your browser.

Added Oct 21, 2026

The Roman Numerals Converter is a roman numerals converter that turns numbers into Roman numerals and Roman numerals into numbers, in your browser. You don’t pick a direction: type 1994 or MCMXCIV and it detects which one you wrote. Nothing is sent to a server, nothing is stored, and it spends no credits.

How do I convert a number to Roman numerals?

Type the number, from 1 to 3999. Some examples:

  • 4 is IV, 9 is IX, 14 is XIV, 40 is XL
  • 1987 is MCMLXXXVII
  • 1994 is MCMXCIV
  • 2026 is MMXXVI
  • 3999 is MMMCMXCIX, the largest standard numeral

Put one value per line to convert a list, such as the years for a set of chapter headings or the dates on a series of certificates.

How do I read Roman numerals?

Type the numeral, in capitals or lowercase. The rules the converter checks are the standard ones: I, X, C and M repeat at most three times in a row, V, L and D never repeat, and a smaller symbol goes before a larger one only in six pairs: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM. Anything else is rejected rather than read loosely.

Why does it say my numeral is invalid?

Clocks and old inscriptions sometimes write 4 as IIII, and people often write 99 as IC or 1990 as MXM. These aren’t standard, so the roman numerals converter rejects them and, when it can tell what you meant, suggests the correct form: IV for 4, XCIX for 99, MCMXC for 1990. That matters most for anything permanent, like a tattoo, an engraving or a cornerstone date.

Where are Roman numerals still used?

  • Dates and years in film credits, building inscriptions and wedding invitations.
  • Tattoos of a birth date or an anniversary.
  • Book chapters, outlines and the front pages of a document.
  • Event names that count editions, from sports finals to annual conferences.
  • Monarchs and popes, and family names like John Smith III.

FAQ

Can it convert 0 or numbers above 3999?

No. Standard Roman numerals have no zero, and above 3999 they need extra notation that isn’t standard. The converter accepts 1 to 3999.

Is IIII wrong?

It isn’t standard. You’ll see it on some clock faces, but the standard form is IV, which is what the converter suggests.

What does it cost?

It comes with the Nexin library: Nexin Lite or Nexin Pro opens it, and it spends no credits.
