This tip calculator works out the tip, the total and each person’s share of a bill in your browser. Type the bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people, and every figure updates as you type, rounded to cents. Nothing is sent to a server, and it spends no credits.
How to calculate a tip
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. On a bill of $48.60, an 18% tip is $8.75, so the total comes to $57.35. The tip calculator does that in one step, so you don’t have to work out 18% of an odd number at the table.
How to split the bill and the tip
Set the number of people and the tool divides both the tip and the total. Four people sharing a bill of $86.40 with a 20% tip pay a tip of $17.28 and a total of $103.68. Each person adds $4.32 of tip and pays $25.92 in all. If the bill is shared unevenly, run it once per group instead.
Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
That depends on local custom and on you. The tool tips on whatever amount you type: enter the subtotal before tax to tip on the food and drinks only, or the full amount to tip on everything.
Worked examples
- $48.60 at 18%, one person: tip $8.75, total $57.35.
- $48.60 at 18%, two people: each pays $28.67, including $4.37 of tip. Two shares of $28.67 make $57.34, a cent under the total.
- $86.40 at 20%, four people: each pays $25.92, including $4.32 of tip.
When a split doesn’t divide evenly to the cent, each share is rounded, so the shares can add up to a cent or two more or less than the total. Round one person up to cover it.
Who it’s for

- Anyone paying for a delivery, a haircut or a taxi who wants the number fast.
