Claude Projects vs Skills: Where Your Brand Context Belongs

Nexin · · 5 min read

Claude Projects hold context: everything Claude should know about one body of work, like a brand or a client. Skills hold a method: instructions for a task that Claude loads in any chat when your request matches. Put what Claude should know about a brand in a Project, and how to do a repeated task in a skill. Most creators need both.

What is a Claude Project?

A Project is a workspace inside Claude. It has its own instructions, its own knowledge files and its own chat history, and all of it applies only to chats you start inside that Project. Upload your brand guide and a few past posts once, and every chat in the Project starts with them.

The limit is the walls. A chat started outside the Project gets none of that context, and a second Project doesn’t share the first one’s files.

What is a Claude skill?

A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md: a name, a description of when to use it, and step-by-step instructions, with optional reference files. Claude keeps only the descriptions in view, then loads the full skill when a request matches, in a normal chat or inside any Project. What Claude skills are covers the format, and how to create a Claude skill shows how to write one.

Claude Projects vs skills: what’s the difference?

Project Skill
Holds Context: files, instructions, history A method: steps, rules, examples
Scope Only chats inside that Project Any chat where the task matches
Loaded The Project’s instructions and files apply to every chat in it Description first, full skill only when needed
Changes when You edit the Project’s files You install a new version
Best example “Everything about Brand A” “How we write a carousel”
Shared with a team On plans that allow Project sharing By sharing the skill folder or an org setting
Works in ChatGPT ChatGPT has its own Projects, set up separately No, but a connector can serve skills there

When should you use a Project?

Use a Project when the work has its own body of facts:

  • One brand or client, with its voice guide and the posts that worked. A brand voice guide belongs here if you run several brands.
  • One campaign or launch, with its brief and dates.
  • Research you return to, like a competitor folder or a lead magnet plan.

Keep Project instructions short and specific to that work. Methods you’d reuse elsewhere don’t belong there.

When should you use a skill?

Use a skill for anything you do the same way in more than one place:

A skill written once works in every Project, which is the point. Writing the same method into ten Project instructions means ten places to update.

How do Projects and skills work together?

Picture a creator running two brands. The setup that holds up:

  1. One Project per brand, holding that brand’s facts: the brand file and its best posts.
  2. One set of skills for the methods, shared by both: how to write Threads posts, carousels, scripts.
  3. In a chat inside Brand A’s Project, ask for “a week of Threads posts”. The Threads skill loads and supplies the method; the Project supplies Brand A’s facts.

The same request in Brand B’s Project produces Brand B’s posts with the same method. Nothing is written twice. How to use Claude for social media walks through this setup in more detail.

What about connectors?

A connector (an MCP server) adds a third place for context: outside Claude. Files saved on a connector follow you into every chat, including ChatGPT. For brand files that change often, or brands you work on in both Claude and ChatGPT, that can replace the copies you’d otherwise keep in each Project. Claude skills vs MCP explains the split, and how to make ChatGPT remember your brand voice covers the ChatGPT side.

FAQ

Can I use a skill inside a Project?

Yes. Skills work in regular chats and inside Projects. The Project supplies the context and the skill supplies the method.

Should my brand voice be a Project or a skill?

If you run one brand, a skill can carry it everywhere. If you run several, keep each voice in its brand’s Project, or in brand files on a connector, so voices never mix.

Do Projects load all their files into every chat?

The Project’s instructions and knowledge are available to every chat inside it. Keep the knowledge to files the work needs, so the important ones aren’t buried.

Can I move a Project’s instructions into a skill?

Yes, and it’s worth doing for any method you repeat. Keep facts about the brand in the Project and turn the steps into a skill.

Methods as tools, brands as files. Nexin’s tools cover the method for each channel, one job per task, and Nexin Core writes the brand file they all read. The Nexin connector saves that file once, so Claude and ChatGPT read it in every chat. Nexin writes; it doesn’t post or schedule. See pricing.
