Short answer: yes, Claude has a free plan. You can chat with Claude on claude.ai, in the desktop app and on your phone at no cost, with usage limits that reset every few hours. Paying gets you more usage and more features: Pro is $20 a month (about $17 a month billed yearly) and Max is $100 or $200 a month. Claude Code is not free: it needs a paid plan or API credits.

What do you get with Claude for free?
The free plan covers everyday use:
- Chat on the web, the desktop app and the iPhone and Android apps.
- Writing, summarizing and analysis, including uploaded files and images.
- Usage limits. Anthropic doesn’t publish a fixed number of messages. Long chats and big files use up the limit faster, and it resets after a few hours.
For a few questions a day, the free plan is enough.

Paid plans have usage limits too. Max raises them; it doesn’t remove them.

- More models, including the larger ones the free plan may not offer.

Is Claude Code free?
No. Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) or an Anthropic Console account with API credits. The free claude.ai plan doesn’t include it.

Is the Claude API free?
